It probably comes as no surprise that stuff these days is built to break. Or, built to become outdated.
We know this because we see it everyday, pouring in through our mail. Cell phones from 2 years ago, laptops from 4 years ago, iPhones from 3 weeks ago. Technology changes pretty rapidly and sometimes it’s hard to keep up.
We’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially because Apple released the new iPhone. It’s so easy to get excited, upgrade and then forget about the old technology you once had.
If you do want to upgrade, the best thing you can do is get some reuse out of your old gadget or recycle it. And if you really want to commit yourself. You can always buy a used gadget too. There are lots of devices in good shape out there.
Awhile back we stumbled across “The Story of Stuff” and it really helped give a perspective on the whole cycle of buying “stuff.” It’s a little controversial and somewhat simplistic, but for people who are starting to explore the green scene, it’s a great starting point.
